  Do not let your pet drink excessively

  Do not let your pet go home and drink excessively. Most dogs are very excited to see their owners again and will often consume large amounts of water if permitted. This is a comming mistake which often results in acute vomiting. The same situation may occur with food and reult in diarrhea. Wait at least one hour and then allow only a small portion of water or food. If your pet is released after 3:00 pm, it will have been fed that day. Please feed nothing more until the following day unless instructed otherwise.

  Pets are tired

  Pets often appear tired and may sleep excessively the first few days after they return home. This is normal and similar to our own responses after being in a strange environment. Most animals recuperating from illness or surgery need a recovery period, but boarding animals also often show signs of fatigue upon returning home.

  No exercise after surgery

  Surgical patients should not be permitted vigorous exercise for 7 – 10 days after surgery. Limit stairs, jumping on/off furniture, etc., and allow leash walks only. Very limited exercise is the best policy for all patients having had abdominal or thoracic surgery. If you are uncertain about after-care, please feel free to call for advice.

  Progress report

  If the doctor requests a progress report on a pet treated at home, please call the receptionist during hospital hours. She will note the information on your pet’s record and relay it to the doctor.
